October the 27th, 2026 – The horrific Omiš fire has now tragically claimed six lives. Despite the severity of the disaster, there has still been no investigation result even after two months. 73 days have now passed since the major fire that broke out on the 13th of August in Lokva Rogoznica and spread down towards Omiš. Katarina Ergovic Arnaut reports for Index that the public still has no answer to the crucial question: how exactly this enormous fire started and who, if anyone, is responsible for it. In the meantime, the number of victims has risen to a horrendous six. Just two days ago, a 66-year-old woman who had been being treated in hospital since August for serious injuries sustained in the fire, died in hospital. Despite the sheer scale of the tragedy, the police and the County State Attorney’s Office in Split have so far not publicly released the results of the investigation, nor have they announced whether the cause of the fire has been determined. It has also not been announced that anyone has been suspected or arrested in connection with its outbreak. camera footage was examined and experts have been on the terrain taking samples The investigation was launched immediately after the fire. The State Attorney’s Office (DORH) announced 71 days ago, on 15 August, that a crime scene investigation had been carried out at the place where the fire started in Lokva Rogoznica, involving the police, a fire and explosion protection inspector, and chemical-physical experts from the “Ivan Vučetić” Centre. Material samples were taken at the site where the fire broke out. Orders were also issued for the seizure of surveillance camera footage from the entire burned area, surveying of the terrain, and photographing of destroyed houses, other buildings and vehicles. DORH stated at the time that the necessary expert examinations and other actions would be carried out in order to establish all the circumstances of the event. Over two months later, the results of these procedures have still not been presented to the public. the fire directly affected around 1,000 hectares According to the findings of the on-site investigation at the time, the fire broke out on the 13th of August around 20:00 in a heavily forested area next to the road in the wider Lokva Rogoznica area. Carried by strong winds, it spread quickly towards Omiš along a strip approximately 23 kilometres long and up to one and a half kilometres wide. Around 1,000 hectares of thick pine forest, grass and Dalmatian shrubs were burned. Numerous houses, business premises, plantations and vehicles were also claimed by the flames, and material damage in the multi millions was caused. Several dozen people were also injured to some extent or another in the fire. The first victim, a seasonal worker from neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dragana Antešević (34), tragically died during the fire itself. Later, retired firefighter Drago Lelas (79), Katica Nikolić (58), Ivana Kovačić (41), a 70-year-old man who was being treated at KBC Split, and the 66-year-old woman who died two days ago also succumbed to their injuries. the question of responsibility With each new victim, the importance of answering the question of how the fire started and whether anyone bears responsibility for the tragedy grows further. The question of the warning system’s response also remains open, because the SRUUK system was not activated during the fire. The system was introduced precisely so that citizens in crisis situations, such as major fires, floods, earthquakes or other immediate dangers, would receive timely warnings and instructions on how to protect themselves. The heartbroken families of the deceased and the public are therefore still waiting for the results of the investigation, as well as an answer to the question of whether all available mechanisms for warning the population were used on the night of the fire.
