The Pretoria Magistrates’ Court has granted North-West businessman Suliman Carrim bail. The court has found that the State failed to prove Carrim was a flight risk or likely to undermine the criminal justice system. It noted concerns about Carrim’s previous failure to attend proceedings before the Madlanga Commission but found these did not establish a likelihood that he would evade his criminal trial. The court ruled that the interests of justice permit his release on bail, subject to stringent conditions. The Magistrate said: “Having weighed the interests of justice against the applicant’s rights to personal freedom and the pressures likely to arise from continued detention, the court finds that the identified risks can be sufficiently addressed through appropriate bail conditions.” “The court accordingly finds that the interests of justice permit the release of the applicant on bail, subject to stringent conditions designed to secure his attendance and compliance with the criminal proceedings.” Live stream: Meanwhile, on Monday, the case against two employees of Carrim was postponed to Friday at the Musina Magistrates’ Court in Limpopo. Musa Phiri and Zakes Ibrahim appeared separately as they are facing charges of fraud, attempted theft of motor vehicles and uttering. The case was postponed in order for the two to formally join Carrim when he returns to court on Friday. Phiri and Ibrahim were arrested at the Beitbridge Border Post in July after they allegedly attempted to transport two vehicles to Malawi using fraudulent bank documents.
