NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 5 – People’s Party of Kenya (PPK) leader Ndindi Nyoro has cited recent political developments in the United States as a warning to President William Ruto, saying growing public dissatisfaction with economic conditions could shape Kenya’s 2027 General Election. Speaking at the party headquarters while receiving new aspirants and delegations from various counties, Nyoro argued that the American electoral outcomes demonstrated voters’ willingness to use the ballot to express dissatisfaction with their leaders. He pointed to Democratic victories in key electoral contests, including areas that had previously backed Republican President Donald Trump, saying the political shifts offered lessons for Kenya’s political leadership. Nyoro said Kenyan voters could similarly use the 2027 elections to demand political change, citing rising public debt, unemployment and the high cost of living as issues likely to influence the next presidential contest. He maintained that economic performance and the government’s handling of the cost-of-living crisis would be central to Ruto’s re-election bid, predicting that voters would hold the administration accountable at the ballot. The PPK leader also accused the President of using public resources and national assets to advance private business interests, arguing that the alleged overlap between government decisions and commercial interests was hurting the economy. He specifically cited the cement and tiles industries, claiming that the President’s business interests in the construction sector were contributing to high building costs for ordinary Kenyans. Nyoro further questioned the government’s Government-to-Government (G-to-G) petroleum importation arrangement and the development of oil resources in Turkana, alleging that national economic decisions were being influenced by private commercial interests. He argued that the management of public assets and strategic sectors should prioritise the interests of citizens rather than private business considerations. The opposition leader warned that what he described as the commercialisation of government was deepening public frustration, insisting that Kenya needed leadership focused on public service and economic welfare. Nyoro’s remarks come as political leaders and parties intensify mobilisation ahead of the August 2027 General Election. The PPK leader said the economic challenges facing households would be a defining factor in the contest, arguing that voters would assess the administration’s record on employment, public debt, construction costs and the cost of living. He maintained that the ballot remained the ultimate instrument through which Kenyans could express their approval or rejection of the government’s performance. President Ruto has consistently defended his administration’s economic policies, citing ongoing investments in infrastructure, housing, agriculture and other sectors as part of efforts to stimulate economic growth and create jobs.
